THROUGH A GLASS DARKLY SCREEN PRINT EDITIONS
In 2009, following on from my Fine Art M.A degree show (2005-2007) where gaming became analogous with existential queries & games controllers became a leitmotif for freewill / the concept of game design a signifier for determinism - I produced a series of screen prints of the 1980s space invaders game Astrowars after finding a working model at a local car boot sale. Filled with nostalgia and calling to mind various issues of mass production and consumption, the image of the game presented itself as a composite of a take home universe where our childish imaginations projected all of time and space into this small contained machine. From my own photographs of the game I developed a four colour screen print. I also ran an edition with just three colours. There are three versions in total - see photographs above, on one edition there was a piece of tape blocking the black (see centre image - right of circle circumference) but I rather liked the random effect it gave - although this was corrected in the remaining run - I also did a run of five prints without any black as the layering of the colours was so spectacular!
The title is a phrase from Corinthians that seems to describe the image perfectly - not seeing things clearly - only a faint impression of the potential that is out there - which is like our knowledge of space, which is gradually being clarified.
THE PRINTS ARE ON A2 PAPER WHICH MEASURES 42 x 59.4cm (A2)- THE PRINT AREA IS c 20 x 20cm
THESE ARE HAND PULLED PRINTS SO NO TWO PRINTS ARE EXACTLY THE SAME. Some have irregularities, where for example the print has aligned differently causing a riot of colours at the edge - please discuss whether you are after a more exact print when ordering.
Recently inspired by Dogecoin champion Elon Musk's proposed ventures towards Mars with Spacex overlapped with Dogecoin's equally positive outlook & its projected interaction with space travel and fun ( witness the meme culture generated in the cause of Dogecoin ) - it seemed wholly appropriate that this was the moment to trial using DOGECOIN as an exchange token for these artworks on early astral gaming.
Dogecoin was originally created as a "joke" by IBM software engineer Shibetoshi Nakamoto a.k.a. Billy Markus and Adobe software engineer Jackson Palmer. The intrinsic element of playfulness of this particular cryptocurrency seemed to add a further dimension to the concept of the prints - extending the gaming idea into the sale itself. Man's presence in space has informed the extremes of our consciousness - the most playful and most serious elements of our life.
The first five prints to be sold using Dogecoin will be available at a trial price of 420 DOGE + the shipping cost of the print in a secure cardboard tube to your destination (eg shipping to the USA is about 290 DOGE with tracking & insurance).
Thereafter the price will rise...
